Hi! When Jamie and I got married I was 18 he was 23.
*Frequent question: “What’s it like being married to a cop?”
Since Jamie was in law enforcement when we began dating, I didn’t know life being married to a civilian. Throughout the years, Jamie served on many jobs within the profession. He drove a patrol car, rode a bicycle, walked a “beat,” was an investigator, rode a police motorcycle, worked at the impound lot, and was an investigator. Each assignment had pros, cons: different days off, varying hours required.
Generally, officers don’t get holidays off. Therefore, our family usually celebrated the events on another date. As seniority and positions changed, scheduling options also fluctuated. Most officers attempt to adjust their schedules to their family’s needs. That privilege may eventually come with a promotion or seniority.
*Another question: “Isn’t being in law enforcement dangerous?”
Yes. However, each year more civilians become disabled or die from car accidents, job related accidents or illnesses than police.
Denise’s tips:
*First, it helps to know God made each of us and has a plan for our lives. He wants us to have a personal relationship with Him. I invite you to stop reading right now and watch the 15 minute video of Jamie.
(Yes, that’s me sitting at his side.)
* Second, it is invaluable to know how to pray. A cop’s spouse needs be able talk with God. Tell Him your needs and concerns. Pray for your loved one throughout their shift. Then trust the fact that God loves them more than you do.
*Appreciate each moment you have together. No one is guaranteed tomorrow.
FYI - Jamie and I were married 30 years, six months, and sixteen days.
At least ninety-five percent of that was incredible!
We laughed often, occasionally quarreled, and sometimes cried.
In the featured video you’ll have the privilege of hearing my hubby speak about “living like you are dying.” That’s honestly how we lived every day. We did our best to talk through misunderstandings, laughed together often, and daily enriched each other’s lives.
If I could go back in time, would I marry Jamie again? Absolutely!
